Critical Times

"Democracy is not a spectator sport."

The goal of this internship project, funded by the Rotary Club of Sarasota, is to share information about local projects that relate to the Rotary mission. Salua Rivero was 

selected by WSLR as the recipient of this internship grant.

 Salua Rivero 

is a recent New College of Florida with a Bachelors degree in environmental studies and a focus on ethnobotany. Salua is interested in environmental and human rights. Salua has always been interested in writing and science communication. She is interested in how Sarasota can become a community which supports one another by interviewing and writing stories of people that are involved in local projects that fit Rotary's missions.

Equitable Education and the 

Lean on Me Program at 

Brookside Middle School

In order to go from equality to equity in the education system we must first understand some definitions. Equality means treating every student the same, while equity means making sure all students have the support they need to be successful; meaning some may need more support than others due to many factors and circumstances. Equity requires ensuring systems and processes are in place and aligned with an equal opportunity for success. School systems today produce mass education, one that is the same for all children regardless of their differences. It is time to start implementing changes that match children’s individual needs.

Promoting Peace through Community Service 
PeaceJam Club at Pineview Highschool

The PeaceJam Foundation is an international organization whose mission statement is "to create young leaders committed to positive change in themselves, their communities, and the world through the inspiration of Nobel Peace Laureates who pass on the spirit, skills, and wisdom they embody." There are currently multiple PeaceJam initiatives and groups in countries throughout the Globe. This story will feature the PeaceJam Club at Pineview Highschool and how a group of students are involved in the PeaceJam foundations mission as well as community service projects they work on their community to promote peace.

COVID-19 and New College of Florida

On March 17th 2020, the State University System Board of Governors (BOG) has instructed all state universities including New College of Florida to extend online classes to the end of the spring semester. Face-to-face classes will not resume until next August. The BOG also cancelled in-person Commencement ceremonies in May. This decision was not made lightly, but it does affect students immensely.

Environmental Injustice - 

Contamination in Tallevast

“The concept of environmental injustice arose from the fact that some communities or human groups are disproportionately subjected to higher levels of environmental risk than other segments of society. Growing concern over unequal environmental burdens and mounting evidence of both racial and economic injustices led to the emergence of a grassroots civil rights campaign for environmental justice in the 1980s in the United States”.

Sarasota Strong 

Sarasota Strong began a little over a year ago when a few women realized that there was a need for a grassroots group to address trauma within the community. They understood that they and most people experience traumatic events that have adverse effects that have an impact on social, physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. Their mission is to “provide community-wide trauma awareness through Healing, Education, Action, and Leadership. Their principles are Safety, Self-healing, Inclusion, Trustworhiness & Transparency, Empowerment, Voice & Choice, Collaboration & Mutuality, Social Justice, and Acting with Urgency. They established working groups that focus on different aspects of their mission.
